*AND* Create two swatches:

Swatch 1:  Garter stitch:

Rows 1 - 8: Knit.

Row 9: K5, P3, K2.

Rows 10 - 12: Knit.

Place swatch on scrap yarn as follows: cut a 12" - 15" length of smooth scrap yarn and thread it onto a tapestry needle.  Slip the stitches off the knitting needle and onto the tapestry needle.  Loosely tie the ends of the scrap yarn together.

*Have a locking stitch marker available!*

Cast on 20 sts.

Rows 1 - 5: Knit.

Rows 6, 8, 10 (RS): Knit.

Row 18 (RS): K8, take the 9th stitch off the left-hand needle and drop it down 3 or 4 rows.  Insert the locking stitch marker into the loose stitch to prevent it from dropping further.  Knit to the end of the row. (19 sts on needle)

Row 19 (WS): Purl.

Row 20 (RS): K5, P3, K5, SL1wyib, K5

Leave sts on needle DO NOT BIND OFF!

**Sl1wyib = slip 1 st with yarn in back.  Insert the right needle into the next st as if to purl and move it to the right needle without twisting it.  Working yarn is in the back.
