Choose Your Own Adventure Socks
In this sock class we’ll start by making a cuff-down sock with a short-row heel called an Origami Heel.
After your first sock is finished you can make the second sock in the same way, or make the second sock starting from the toe up and learn how that construction works.
The socks will be virtually identical since we’ll use the Origami Heel for each sock, and the cast on technique for sock 1 and the bind off technique for sock 2 match each other.
Instructor: Linda Shields
6 sessions - 2 hours each
Supplies:
Yarn: (2 colors) fingering, DK, or worsted weight sock yarn (some nylon content):
- For fingering weight you’ll need 80g - 100g main color and 30g contrasting color
- For DK weight you’ll need 100 - 120g main color and 40g contrasting color
- For worsted weight you’ll need 150g main color and 50g contrasting color
These yarn amounts are approximate, and you may need more or less depending on what size feet the socks are for and whether you’re making mid-calf socks or shorties.
Needles: appropriate for small circumference in the round: double pointed needles, one long circular needle (32”) for magic loop, two circular (16 or 24” circular), or 9” circular.
If you use a 9” circular make sure to bring one of the other types of needles (long circular preferred) for working the toes and heels of your socks.
The size of your needle(s) should enable you to get a gauge of:
- approximately 9 stitches per inch if using fingering weight yarn (usually US size 0 - 2)
- approximately 7 stitches per inch if using DK weight yarn (usually US size 2.5 - 3)
- approximately 6 stitches per inch if using worsted weight yarn (usually US size 4 - 5)
These needle sizes are guidelines; you’ll have to swatch to see what needle size you need to make the recommended gauge for your yarn weight.
Notebook and pen/pencil or a note-taking app on your device, removable stitch markers, snips, and a blunt tapestry needle.
Pattern provided by the instructor.
Skills required before taking class:
casting on and joining in the round, working small circumference in the round on the method you choose, increases (kf&b) and decreases (k2tog and ssk).
This can be your first sock knitting class if you are adventurous and patient; it’s highly recommended that you make the DK or worsted weight sock.
Skills learned:
Italian Tubular cast on and Tubular bind off, Origami Short Row Heel, Kitchener stitch for grafting, Turkish cast on.
Homework:
Purchase/gather your supplies and make some swatches using your chosen yarn to determine what needle size you need to use to obtain the gauge recommended for your yarn weight.
Class Size: 6 students maximum, 3 students minimum. If the 3 student minimum is not met, Needles in the Haymarket can either refund the class or move the student to a class scheduled at a later date.
